This painting was commissioned by Culgaith Parish Council in association with Eden District Council (Millenium Fund) and is now hanging in St Lawrence Church, Kirkland.

The painting was made in celebration of the new millennium. It depicts the Pennine fellside above Kirkland - emphasising the history of the area made visible by the traces of past activity: glacier worn valleys, ancient boundary walls, sheep tracks and eroded hollows, slippages of water-logged earth, and the occasional scars made more recently by tractors. The painting was being made at the height of the UK foot and mouth epidemic and it was policy at the time to take all sheep off the fell . . which is exactly what the shepherd, bottom right, is doing.
